What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys come with unique chips that are specific to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This helps prevent thieves from simply taking the key and then starting the car.

They are usually purchased from a dealership or cloned by a locksmith. The process of the manufacturer varies however, it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position, without beginning the car, and then removing the key within the specified time.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is questioned, it sends an encoded signal with a four-digit code. This signal is called the SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to send a specific message to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are essential for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders can be found in various modes that vary in how they respond to questions. Mode A only transmits the code, while mode C also contains altitude information. Mode S transponders provide more detailed information like callsigns as well as position. This is useful in airspace that is crowded.



A common sight is a small brown box beneath a pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. While a longer PIN code might appear to be more secure, there are ways to guess or hack the PIN code just four digits long. It is recommended that a PIN be at least six digits in length, using a mix of letters and numbers, to give more security. PIN codes are also required by some OEMs for key programmers from aftermarket as a security measure to ensure that they are not used by non-authorized people to harvest data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on the planet and are not applicable to alien vehicles (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code contain the combination of letters and numbers that can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.

Modern cars contain a huge amount of information about their history and specs and functions as mobile digital libraries. A VIN number is the key to unlock this data and lets you learn everything from whether your vehicle is in a recall to how many times it's changed owners.

A VIN number is made up of various sections, each with a specific piece of information. The first digit identifies the kind of vehicle it is, like as a pickup truck or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit is the assembly division of the car, and the fourth through eighth digits define the model type, restraint system type and body type as well as engine and transmission codes. The ninth digit functions as a check digit in order to prevent fraud. It verifies that the VIN has not been altered.

In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are known as the Vehicle Identification Section, or VIS. The tenth number indicates the year of the vehicle's production, and the eleventh digit is a clue to the assembly plant that made the vehicle. This error storage could be useful if you want to keep an eye on a particular application and prevent losing data records if they are not successfully reloaded.
